I don't think it's ever been discussed... how old is Clu anyways? I always imagine him being Jack's age (15-17)... but the fact that he goes off to college in S2 would imply he's either 18 at that point, at least two years older than Jack... or he got his GED and went off to college at an earlier age. I go with him being 18 when he went to college (though I do think they originally intended him to be Jack's age, but then retconned it). I do admit that's a little problematic with their sizes in the flashback to Christmases past. We do know Clu had his driver's license before Jack did. I don't remember where I saw this, but I could have sworn when the series began, Fi is meant to be 13, Jack is 15 and Clu is 16, meaning he goes off to college at 17/18. And I think Carey is meant to be one year older than Clu. Maybe the Bell boys have just always been very tall for their ages? lol

I wanted to add that Clu is definitely not as dumb as he seems. He has a fairly large vocabulary despite ending almost every sentence with "man" or "dude". There's an episode, I think "Simplicity", where he's arguing with about the rules for a test and says Jack will have a "demoralizing edge" if he can't use his calculator. That's why I always chuckle in "NIghtmare" when Molly's talking about convergent dreams and both he and Carey go, "Convergent what?" Like, they understood "convergent" but not "dream" Interesting. However, I have this headcannon that Clu smoked himself stupid over in Santa Cruz and that's why he comes back from college so dense and spouting weird philosophical nonsense in Season 3

Not sure I personally agree with that headcanon. I do believe Clu was a total stoner throughout, but I don't think that's why he was dumbed down in S3, that was just issues with the overall writing in S3. Smoking too much weed doesn't make a person stupid, that's just a stoner stereotype. In personal experience, smoking a lot of weed does help one see the bigger picture and question reality... which is honestly what he did a lot of in S3.
