I often hear Eerie, Indiana mentioned alongside So Weird, whether it's in Youtube comments or articles. All of the episodes are on Youtube, so I decided to give it a watch.
One of the reasons this show is compared to So Weird is because they both aired on Disney Channel, EerIe as reruns from 1993-1996. I think the comparisons are certainly fair, as Marshall (the main character of Eerie) and Fi both develop or have a passion for exposing the weirdness of their worlds. In fact, I'd say Eerie is even weirder than So Weird, but the tone and themes of the shows are very different.
The theme of Eerie seems to be the weirdness of suburban life, whereas So Weird is more centered in grief and family. To me, the characters in Eerie are not all that interesting and don't evolve much, but I believe this is somewhat intentional to capture the boring, false normalcy of the people who live in this town. Unfortunately, when an episode's premise doesn't hold up well, the characters are not enough to keep the show afloat. It's only with the introduction of a new character more than halfway into the show that I actually got a better sense of who Marshall, the main character, was.
I think Eerie has some fun episodes and would recommend that So Weird fans check it out. There are definitely a couple episodes that will make you think of an episode in So Weird ("Heart on a Chain," for example) but I don't think So Weird ripped off this show. Even the episodes with similar concepts seem to be thematically different.
