Molly stops by a recording studio headed by a woman who uses the recording equipment to steal musical talent and transfer it into her reluctant daughter. Meanwhile, Annie hears a strange backwards message while in the studio that may be a warning.

Just watched this last night and that girl's mom was SO selfish! Stealing other peoples' talents and leaving them washed up and talentless, just because she wanted her own daughter to be "the most talented" ...Wow! I felt bad for the girl, even though things were settled in the end. Glad she stood up to the methods of her morally-questionable mother. lol

Yup, you could tell how her mom affected her daughter. The mother couldn't see her real daughter, only the talents that were stolen :/

And There's something that always confused me about this episode. What are they? Witches I'm not sure if that was mentioned in the episode. Possibly. She has the power to take away talent and transfer it?

That part confused me too. It never explained WHAT they were or how they were able to steal talents from people - unless I missed it. The part that was extra sad (in more than one way) was when the mom kept saying she's given her daughter everything with these stolen powers and the daughter said: But I don't WANT them.
So the mom's reply was ... "That's all I have to give you. What else could you possibly want?" I was like ... DANG! Don't expect a mother of the year award coming your way! lol

Well, I can kinda see where the mom is coming from. Definitely there's a selfish element involved but if she was just totally out for her daughter's sake she wouldn't be a very interesting character. Wanting your kid to succeed definitely isn't a bad thing; it's the way she goes about it (stealing other peoples' talents, only seeing her daughter as a pile of talents and not considering her feelings) that ultimately makes her a villain.
As to "what she is," I always saw her as kinda Ursula-esque in the way she stole peoples' musical abilities. Think about it: she signs artists who are talented, they record their first hits (akin to the deal Ursula makes with Ariel, her "heart's desire"), then she steals their talents in order to give to her daughter. I don't know if it was totally intentional (I think the real reason this episode is set in a recording studio at all is to give some more background on the panther, and on Annie's fateful Amazon trip as a child, through something uber-cool and at the time somewhat trendy) but that's how I've always viewed the episode.

I like this ep, and it has my favorite Annie song. Little surprised Molly has a former professor, though. Was my impression she started with her music career in her teens. Know she won the songwriting competition at 15, and Phillips-Kane was formed when she was 19 (or 18, but 197/8, anyway) from both behind-the-scenes info and 's "Dodgers' stadium" comment has been recycled since 1979. Just a continuity bit lost in the transition, I guess. Though we can't blame the transition for the plot-convenient, never-seen-before cat in "Shelter."

One thing I really like about this one is Carey being aware of the weirdness. He picks up on that this the last album graveyard and then after seeing Jennifer playing the guitar, he actually tells Annie not to record until they get back. It's great. Hearkens back to how aware he was in . Always nice when a non-main-character picks up on something (Clu in "Memory", etc.), even if they don't really follow through.
