I remember having Fi/Clu and slight Carey/Annie tendencies when I originally watched the show. And the canonical ships, of course. But started rewatching yesterday (or Friday?) and I'm not seeing why I shipped Fi/Clu. They're friendly, but don't seem interested or even any closer friends that Clu and Jack or Jack and Carey. Haven't gotten around to rewatching season 3 yet (though I do now think I originally incorrectly thought of Carey as 18 in S3), and I expect I'll get the same impressions there. So, what did I see back then - just unattached opposite-sex young people? Carey and Annie's mutual love of music? Clu's willingness to go along with Fi's adventures?
So, want to help me out here? Provide me hints and show-moments I can twist to support my ships or else I'll have to fall back on my canonical ships (and Jack/Gabe will remain my personal headcanon, disregarding indications to the contrary in S3) and leave all the other kids open to OC romances. Not that I care for OC fic, generally.

Welcome to the forums!
Jon Cooksey, one of the executive producers and writers for the show, wrote a doc full of original season 3 stuff that says that Fi would have started "noticing" Clu in the original S3, but that there wouldn't be a payoff for a couple of years. You can check it out here. Just click on Season 3 ideas. So Fi and Clu, it sounds like, would have become canon eventually!
As for moments to support this, I created a gifset of some here. I do think that the fact that he usually goes along with her theories when no one else will gives them a unique relationship.
Don't know about Carey and Annie, as I haven't watched S3 much.

I love this topic! As for Clu/Fi I've always shipped them but like it's been said, in seasons 1-2 it seems like they were in the stage where they don't know how good they are for each other yet. But some hints are: -Fi comforting Clu in Memory -Fi seeming a little jealous in Escape - Not only does Clu come to Fi's aid to support her in her adventures, she's also the first to back him up when he's trying to divert 's attention from his bad grade in Escape - How cute they are in Singularity; Clu not wanting Fi to feel left out, Fi laughing at Clu's bad jokes, the at the end - Clu comforts her in Nightmare while Jack's talking to the little kid - Clu's line "I'll walk slow" after Jack won't wait for Fi to go to the store, showing Clu wanted to wait for her and doesn't regard her as just the tag-along sister - How happy Fi is for Clu when he finds out he's accepted into college and how Clu picks her up when he her - When Clu is off "at college" they're seen having one-to-one conversations on line in Blues - In season 3, (I think Eddie's Desk) Annie messages Fi on line and Clu is really insistent that Annie tells Fi that he says hi and when Fi types hi back he goes "All right!" to himself, like he's so happy she said hi back Those are just the ones I can think of right now, and I am so going to start working on a Clui Flu vid for further evidence. As for Carey and Annie, I've always thought he was too old for her and looked at her more like a younger sister (he calls her "kiddo" in Detention (and then tells her she and Jack are a lot alike so I personally like to think he's a closet Jannie shipper)) but they have a cute shoulder bump moment at the end of Banglebye.

Yeah, as I said, I'd thought of him as younger back then. Also I was younger, and that played into my perception, too, I'm sure. Even then, it was something for a couple years in the future. Because they both were all about the music, and with her a singer and him a guitarist they would have compatible lifestyles. Now, I think any story with them in the next 3-to-5 years (probably couldn't sell me on sooner), would have to deal with the age gap as a serious issue. But when I was that age, I had to ship everybody.
Nowadays, though, I watch shows and sometimes feel like "why can't they just be friends" and wonder why everyone had to be shipped. Everyone. Including siblings. I really enjoy good platonic friendship stories. Like, there's a Librarians fic-a-thon this week. And, though I ship Eve/Flynn, I'm much more eager for a nice Jenkins & Ezekiel or Jenkins & Eve friendship fic.
Anyway, I don't tolerate large age gaps even among the fictional under-18s like I used to. I'd also incorrectly though remembered Clu as Jack's age (I remembered he left, of course, but not that it was for college), and the four-year gap between Clu and Fi is a bit too much for me to be into them for at least a year. For the under-18s in fic, I'm sort of "if the younger party is below 15, then up to two years older, if 15-17, allow three years."
And I admit, I kinda think Fi and Ryan are cute now. And I saw that he had e-mailed her in "Avatar."

Yeah, I can see Carey and Annie bonding over music and being close in the future. Did we ever find out how old Carey is supposed to be? I think I had the opposite problem as pegging him a little older than he is. I found a Molly/Carey fansite when I was like 14 and I have been unable to unsee the subtext ever since (it's my favorite crack ship, but I can't ship it seriously). But I always thought of him as being no younger than 25 and I always saw him as a young adult, emphasis on adult. When you're a kid, it's easier to see young adults as being more adult than they are just because they're older than you are. I honestly never thought about the age gap between Fi and Clu. I guess because they're all tutored by so it's not like the typical school setting where they're separated by grade. I thought it was just 3 years though because when Fi's 14, Jack is 16 and I thought Clu was just one year older than Jack. I had no concept of age differences as a kid beyond "I'm a little kid, those are teenagers/big kids, Carey's the cool young adult and then there's the parent adults." Shipping age gaps in under 18 characters just weird now. No freshman should be dating a senior and no middle schooler should be dating a high schooler and no high schooler should be dating someone in college unless they started dating before one started college and even then realistically it won't last long.

I don't know that we got a specific age. He "dropped out" of college for season 2, so is likely no older than 21 at that time (possibly dropping out directly before senior year). I tend think it was his first year of college and he was 19 (dropping out before sophomore year). Partially because he was hanging out with the kids when home for summer and partially because young Clu and Carey appear similarly-sized in the flashback in "Fountain." Though Clu's wearing Jack's clothes then, and that doesn't really make sense with a two-year age difference unless either he was small or Jack was large for their ages.

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks!

I totally ship Fi/Clu. I never thought that they would have become canon, though. I am thrilled to see that the writers said that. I count them as canon now.

I'm so glad the producers were on that same track. I particularly love the two of them in Singularity....I imagine that while Clu was away at college he was studying physics after the time warp incident.
