I might be in the minority but I never really cared for his character. He knew his wife was scared by his investigations but he continued doing them. In that flash back sequence in season three (blanking on which one) Molly had flashes/memories of Rick saying ... crap I forgot LOL but it gave the feel of get over yourself do your job; not really supportive. To me he always came across as the type to do a really good job presenting a happy life and happy family yet the reality was far different. I even wrote a fic in like 2001 or 2002 that I'm admittedly pretty proud of (ignoring my always horrible grammar and spelling) that explored how life would have been different if Rick hadn't died. At first Fiona is thrilled her daddy is back but soon she starts to see things aren't as perfect as she always fantasized they have been. Which I think is also part of the reason fans seem to like Rick is because we only really see him through the perspective and memories of people who were both under 8 when he died. But this is a appreciation post! Something nice...he was a great guitar player and even in death he finds a way to keep his family safe.

And Fi's mom is really scared by her investigations, but she keeps doing them. Those investigations are fighting evil and saving lives, not just for fun. Though, yeah, both of them seem to find them fun, too.

Rick didn't keep investigating the paranormal just to spite Molly. He did it because he suspected there was something bigger going on, and he was right. Evil was invading the universe. I'm not sure if Rick knew that before or after he died but he was definitely going to discover something big as indicated by Cooksey.
I've kind of compared Rick to a hunter on Supernatural, but that's ultimately not a fair comparison. There isn't really any contextual evidence that Rick had help in his fight. Even the original season three plans don't mention Fi meeting someone who knew Rick and helped him in his endeavors. John Kane and Molly knew what he was doing, but it doesn't seem that anyone helped him. Molly had experimented with witchcraft as a kid but she didn't get involved. Based on the flashback in "Nightmare," Rick didn't ask her to that night, either, which is decent.
It doesn't seem fair to judge Rick based off the flashback in "Medium." Who's to say Rick really said those things, anyway? Irene was the one saying them in present day and perhaps Molly was just imagining Rick saying them to her since he was on her mind, anyway.

I remember that fic! I loved it.
It's a good point that we look at Rick through rose-tinted sunglasses because all we have are fragmented memories of him. Even Jon Cooksey brought up how if Rick were to be brought back to life, he'd have faults, there would be days where he and Molly would fight and things wouldn't be perfect.
Rick and Molly, to me, never felt like one of those families that pretends to be happy though. I do believe they were in love and Rick was naive; Molly have been able to sense danger coming, but it seems to me that Rick never considered how dangerous his hobby was. I don't think it makes him a bad character-- just a human with flaws.

Thinking about it now, it's kind of like in real life, when people die, everyone seems to just forget all their faults and it's all " , they were such a good person" or "Heaven got another angel today," blah, blah, blah... all the aspects of their character that doesn't put them in a good light seems to not be important anymore.
